Comparison

DonorFinch vs Givebutter

Givebutter is a large, well-liked all-in-one: forms, events, auctions, peer-to-peer, email and texting, free as long as your donors are asked to tip Givebutter at checkout. Switch tips off and it becomes a 3% platform. DonorFinch is narrower and cheaper: the donation form, the donor database and the accounting sync, at 1.5%, with your donors never asked for a tip.

Where Givebutter is the better choice

  • Breadth: events, auctions, peer-to-peer, live displays, email and SMS campaigns in one product.
  • Venmo and PayPal at checkout in addition to cards and wallets.
  • A very large user base and top ratings on review sites — plenty of peers to ask.
  • When tips are on, processing fees that donors don't cover are backed by Givebutter, so you keep the full gift.

Where DonorFinch is different

  • No donor tips, ever. Our fee is 1.5% to you and your donors see only your organization at checkout.
  • Lower cost when you don't want tips: Givebutter's no-tip rate is 3% plus 2.9% + 30¢; DonorFinch is 1.5% plus Stripe's 2.2% + 30¢ nonprofit rate, from your own Stripe account.
  • Deposit-level QuickBooks Online sync included: payouts post as single deposits, split by fund, fees broken out.
  • Receipts, letters and year-end statements that tie out to the ledger, plus roles and an audit log.
  • Built for one job. No events, auctions or email marketing to configure or pay for.

Our honest recommendation

Pick Givebutter if you run events and auctions, want email and texting in the same tool, and are comfortable with donors being asked to tip the platform. Pick DonorFinch if you want the donation form and the donor database done properly, the lowest fee without tips, and your QuickBooks kept in sync automatically.

Questions

Common questions

What does a $100 gift cost on each?
Givebutter with tips on: you receive $100 and the donor is asked to add a tip to Givebutter. Tips off: $3 platform + $3.20 processing, you receive $93.80 unless the donor covers fees. DonorFinch: you receive $96.00, or the full $100 if the donor ticks “cover processing fees” (then they pay $104.15). No tip is ever requested.
Does DonorFinch do events or peer-to-peer?
No. DonorFinch is the donation form, recurring giving, donor CRM, receipts, statements, reports and QuickBooks sync. Many organizations use a separate tool for the occasional event and record those gifts in DonorFinch so their donor records stay complete.
Can I bring my own Stripe account?
Yes — DonorFinch requires it. Donations settle directly into your organization's Stripe account and bank; we never hold funds.
