Getting Stripe's nonprofit rate

Registered 501(c)(3)s can ask Stripe for 2.2% + 30¢ on cards. Here's how, and what changes in DonorFinch (nothing).

Stripe's standard US card rate is 2.9% + 30¢. Stripe offers 2.2% + 30¢ to eligible nonprofits. The discount is between you and Stripe; DonorFinch's 1.2% fee is unchanged either way.

Who qualifies

Stripe's published criteria (check stripe.com/pricing and Stripe's support site for the current wording):

  • A registered 501(c)(3) organization
  • More than 80% of your payment volume is tax-deductible donations
  • Your Stripe account is activated and in good standing

How to apply

  1. Finish connecting Stripe through DonorFinch and complete Stripe's activation.
  2. Contact Stripe support from your Stripe dashboard ("Help" → contact) and ask for nonprofit pricing. Have your EIN and IRS determination letter ready; Stripe usually asks for proof of status.
  3. Stripe reviews and, if approved, applies the rate to your account. It isn't retroactive.

Until approved, Stripe charges its standard rate on each gift.

What changes in DonorFinch

Nothing you need to do. Fees are whatever Stripe charges your account; the Deposits report shows the actual Stripe fee on each gift. The fee-cover calculation on your forms assumes the nonprofit rate; see How donors cover fees if you want to understand the small difference while you're on the standard rate.

Not a 501(c)(3)?

Churches, schools, PTAs, clubs and other groups can use DonorFinch and Stripe. You'll pay Stripe's standard rate, and the standard "tax-deductible contribution" language on receipts applies only if your organization is actually tax-exempt. If you're unsure of your status, ask your accountant before telling donors their gifts are deductible.
